Mastering the fundamentals is the foundation of any sport, and soccer is no exception. Dribbling is the jet fuel of the game—essential for maintaining possession, creating opportunities, and driving team play. The most effective way to improve your dribbling is through consistent, purposeful drills. Below are ten proven soccer dribbling drills that will help you build control, speed, and confidence on the ball.

Why Dribbling Drills Matter

Dribbling in soccer is similar to dribbling in basketball: it keeps the flow of play moving and allows players to navigate defenders. By running targeted drills, you develop the muscle memory and touch needed to handle the ball under pressure. The following drills are used by professionals and are designed to strengthen core skills, improve ball control, and enhance overall conditioning.

Top 10 Dribbling Drills

1. Cone Drill

Set up six or more cones several yards apart. Dribble through the cones without knocking any over. Repeat as needed, switching from left to right to build ambidexterity. This drill helps you stay in control and manage the general flow of the ball during gameplay.

2. Doggies (25’s)

Also known as “25’s,” this drill strengthens your core and conditioning. Place three to four cones in a line. Sprint between them while dribbling, with rest intervals as needed. Perform six to ten sets for optimal results. Pro players frequently use this drill to improve endurance and ball handling.

3. Dribble With a Partner

This drill improves your ability to keep the ball in play and to give and receive passes. Have a partner bounce the ball in front of you, then pass it back and forth 20 to 40 times using the inside of your foot. Switch feet to mix up the pattern.

4. Random Dribble

A fast-paced drill designed to enhance passing ability and turning speed. Players work in tandem, moving through a precarious arrangement of cones at a brisk pace. Though challenging for novices, this drill pays off in improved game performance over time.

5. Straight Cone Dribble

Place 10 to 15 cones in a straight line. A trainer or partner lobs the ball at you; you then control it by dribbling through the cones with both feet. This drill reinforces firm control in confined spaces, denying the opposition any chance to snatch the ball.

6. Zig-Zag Dribble

Set up cones in a zigzag pattern, a couple of yards apart, stretching to a manageable length. The first player dribbles outside the cones, zigging and zagging to the end point, then restarts the drill. This helps you harness control over the ball’s velocity.

7. Closed-Space Dribbling

Place four cones several yards apart to create a confined space. Stand inside with a partner and a ball. Dribble while your partner attempts to steal the ball. If your partner intercepts, switch positions. This drill prepares you for tight spots during a match and is used by elite teams like the LA Galaxy.

8. Figure Eight Dribble

Create two grids about five yards apart, separated by training sticks. Players dribble in figure-eight formations around the cones without knocking them over, moving both left and right. This drill builds skill in working the ball with the inside of the foot.

9. Round the Circle Dribble

Place a cone at the center of the field, surrounded by a circular formation of 10 to 15 cones. Players maneuver inside the circle, executing short, swift touches on the ball. Repeat at increasing speeds and in varying sets to develop athletic consistency.

10. Round the Square Dribble

Similar to the previous drill but using a square formation of cones. Players move within the square, dribbling with the inside of their feet. At the sound of a coach’s whistle, switch directions. Perform until the movement becomes automatic, keeping you aware of changing surroundings while maintaining ball control.

Safety and Practice Tips

Practice these drills safely and with appropriate social distancing guidelines in mind. The pandemic remains a factor, so always prioritize the well-being of yourself and others when training. Use these drills as a starting point, and continue exploring other similar exercises to further develop your skills.
