5 Soccer Passing Drills Using Small Goals

For soccer players at any level, mastering passing techniques requires consistent practice. Whether training at home or in the yard, these five easy-to-learn drills use a training ball and a small pop-up goal to build touch, control, and accuracy. Work through each drill methodically, and your passing game will improve noticeably.

Drill 1: Cone Weave Pass

Set up four to eight cones in a straight line or zigzag pattern in a small outdoor space. Cross-dribble through the cones using the inside of both feet. After exiting the cone array, perform a pass to either the right or left of the small goal. Repeat the sequence three to five times with each foot. This drill develops close ball control and directional passing under pressure.

Drill 2: Defensive Pass

Using the same cone formation from Drill 1, approach the cones as if you are a defender. Dribble toward the cones, then upon reaching them, execute a pass to either side of the goal. This variation reinforces passing under defensive simulation and helps sharpen reaction time. Repeat three to five times per foot.

Drill 3: Figure 8 Pass

Arrange cones in a figure-eight pattern, with each loop about three to five yards apart. Starting with one foot, dribble through the figure eight and attempt a completion pass into the small goal. Perform three to five reps with each foot, or continue until the movement feels smooth and controlled. This drill benefits both beginners and experienced players by combining agility with passing accuracy.

Drill 4: Cone Weave Into Pass

Similar to Drill 1, but with a critical difference: use only one foot throughout the entire sequence. Weave through the cones while moving away from the goal. After clearing the final cone, perform a tight turn around it and then execute a pass into the goal. This drill isolates one foot, building strength and precision. If performed in linear order, it builds naturally on the earlier exercises.

Drill 5: The Ol’ Cut N’ Pass

Place two cones about ten yards apart, aligned with the goalposts. Start at one cone, dribble toward the other at a steady but agile pace. Upon reaching the far cone, execute a sharp cut and immediately shoot to either side of the goal. Repeat in both directions until the cut-and-pass motion becomes automatic. This classic drill combines speed, footwork, and finishing in a single fluid movement.
