adidas has introduced OCEAUNZ, the official match ball for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. This marks the ninth consecutive tournament ball produced by adidas for the women’s event, with a design tailored to the speed and demands of elite-level football. The ball stands out as one of the most visually striking match balls released in recent years.
Design Inspired by the Host Nations
OCEAUNZ features a white pearlescent base, overlaid with blues and greens that echo the landscapes of Australia and New Zealand. The patterns reference the mountain ranges of New Zealand and Australia’s connection to the Indian Ocean. Cultural motifs and the initials of both host nations celebrate the joint hosting of the tournament.
The Australian artwork was created by Chern’ee Sutton, a renowned local artist, while the New Zealand markings were designed by Kiwi artist Fiona Collis. Additional patterns on the ball incorporate elements of the game itself, including footballs and goal shapes.
Technology for Faster, Fairer Play
Like the official match ball used at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, OCEAUNZ is equipped with connected ball technology. It captures precise ball data and transmits it in real time to Video Match Officials. When combined with player position tracking and artificial intelligence, this system supports FIFA’s semi-automated offside technology and provides Video Assistant Referees with instant information to improve decision‑making.
Built for the Modern Game
Franziska Loeffelmann, adidas Design Director of Football Graphics, noted that the upcoming World Cup represents a milestone for women’s football, especially following record viewership of the previous Women’s Euros. She stressed that the ball’s innovative technology and design—inspired by the natural landscape of the host nations—are intended to help players cope with the increasing pace and demands of the sport. The organisation looks forward to the tournament elevating the women’s game to new heights in two welcoming host countries.
With anticipation for the Women’s World Cup at an all‑time high and OCEAUNZ’s vivid aesthetics, the ball is expected to become a highly sought‑after piece of football memorabilia.
