As the UEFA Champions League returns with knockout stage action, adidas has introduced a commemorative match ball for the remainder of the 2020–21 season. The new ball is designed to mark 20 years of the competition and will be used from the round of 16 through to the final in Istanbul.
Design and Inspiration
The ball incorporates the designs of the last 20 match balls used in Champions League finals. Each panel features a different design that recalls a specific final from the past two decades. The iconic star-shaped panels alternate with these commemorative panels to form the classic starball silhouette.
Match Ball for the Knockout Stages
The ball will be in play from the round of 16 onward and will remain in use until the final on 29 May 2021 at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.
Colour Scheme and Details
The predominant colour is grey, applied to the panels that bear the designs of the previous final balls. An orange stripe runs within each panel, accompanied by an inscription that identifies which final the design represents. The star panels are white with black outlines. Some stars feature orange-coloured details inside, including the Champions League trophy, the competition logo, the adidas logo, or the two teams facing each other. The overall colour palette is winter-themed, with orange taking centre stage alongside grey and a very light blue.
