Adidas X18 Purespeed Energy Mode: Laceless Speed Boot for World Cup

With the World Cup approaching, adidas has unveiled the X18 Purespeed, a new speed-focused football boot released as part of the upcoming Energy Mode pack. The boot is available in two models: the X18+ and the X18.1.

Laceless Design Across All Key Silhouettes

The most notable feature of the X18+ is its laceless construction, marking the first time all three of adidas’s key silos are available without laces. This change brings a completely different type of on-pitch performance to the series.

Design and Innovation

While the X18 series draws some visual references to the classic F50 line, it establishes its own distinctive style with fresh innovations.

CLAW COLLAR Construction

The boot starts around the ankle with a new low-cut CLAW COLLAR, reinforced by a stretch material that secures the foot in place during play. This design provides increased stability and support.

SKELETALWEAVE and SPEEDMESH Upper

The upper features an unusual patterned surface, built with a lightweight technology called SKELETALWEAVE that employs speed yarns. Beneath this, an ultra-soft SPEEDMESH offers a controlled touch without restricting foot movement.

Updated SPEEDFRAME Outsole

The outsole has been updated with arrowhead-shaped studs on the forefoot, designed for optimal traction during rapid acceleration. Small holes just beneath the surface are part of a drillium engineered tooling process, where strategic sections are drilled out of the soleplate to reduce weight without affecting durability.

Designer’s Perspective

The World Cup is the pinnacle of any player’s career. The challenge for designers is producing a boot which highlights the natural talents of these incredible athletes on the world’s biggest sporting stage. With the new Energy Mode X18+, the goal was to create something lightweight and minimalist, removing barriers between foot and ball while still achieving the elite touch and support at high speed required by the game’s most explosive players.

Players Set to Wear the X18 Purespeed

The new X18 Purespeed series will debut in the Champions League final, with a host of Real Madrid and Liverpool stars expected to wear them. The line-up includes Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Marcelo, and Mohamed Salah.

In the weeks following, other top stars such as Gabriel Jesus, David De Gea, David Villa, Diego Costa, and Luis Suarez are also set to wear the boots.
