Many recent football boots have been built around a player’s personal story or image. But the boots worn by Kevin-Prince Boateng tell a different kind of story – one that confronts a persistent injustice in society and on the pitch.
Over the past months, discrimination based on skin colour or ethnic background has become a widely discussed issue, especially following events in the United States. Football has not been spared: matches have been suspended because of racist chants, and players have walked off the pitch after being targeted with abuse. These incidents, still occurring well into the 21st century, show that sport – like every other part of society – still has a long way to go.
Boateng, born in Berlin to Ghanaian parents, decided to use his platform to address this problem. He now plays in a customised pair of Puma Ultra boots that carry a clear and urgent message.

A Deeply Meaningful Design
The boots feature several symbolic elements. One boot displays the phrase “Black Lives Matter”, the slogan that gained worldwide attention after the death of an African-American man sparked protests and online campaigns. That movement has become a global symbol of the fight against racial discrimination.
On the other boot, a clenched fist breaking chains represents the end of racial oppression and the ongoing pursuit of freedom, equality and justice for people from all backgrounds.
On the heel, the most direct message of all appears: “No to racism” – an unequivocal rejection of any form of discrimination or exclusion.

Technical Performance: Lightweight Speed Boot
From a performance perspective, these Puma Ultra boots are identical to the standard model. They follow the brand’s lightweight design philosophy, offering a feel similar to that of a traditional speed boot. The construction provides a comfortable and precise fit, while the FG/AG outsole delivers strong traction on natural grass and modern artificial surfaces.
Football as a Tool for Social Change
Beyond their on-pitch capabilities, these boots stand out because they serve as a platform for a message of respect, equality and the fight against racism. They demonstrate that football can be more than a game – it can raise awareness and drive positive change both on the pitch and in wider society.
