Mitre has partnered with performance technology specialist PlayerData to unveil the world’s first GPS-enabled Connected Ball. This innovation embeds FIFA‑quality GPS tracking directly into the ball, promising to transform training, development and performance analysis for players at every level.
A New Era for Football Training
Currently in development and scheduled for an official launch in Summer 2026, the Mitre x PlayerData Connected Ball integrates GPS technology without the need for external local positioning systems or optical tracking setups. Designed to be taken straight out of the bag and played with, the ball captures rich, real‑time data during everyday sessions. A subscription‑based model aims to keep both cost and complexity low, making the technology accessible from grassroots pitches to elite training grounds.

Technology Partner: PlayerData
PlayerData is a sports technology company that already supports more than 50,000 athletes and coaches worldwide. Known for delivering elite‑level insights through wearable GPS trackers, the company’s mission has been to make data‑driven development accessible across the game. Embedding that technology into the ball takes this ambition a significant step further, combining physical GPS metrics with technical and tactical ball data for the first time.
What the Connected Ball Measures
For years, physical GPS metrics such as distance covered and high‑speed running have been standard in performance analysis. Technical and tactical data, however, has remained largely in the shadows despite being fundamental to football success. The Connected Ball is being developed to bridge that gap.
Once released, coaches and analysts will be able to track:
- Kick volume
- Pass distance and velocity
- Overall ball touches across training cycles

Performance Use Cases
The technology is designed to support a wide range of performance applications:
- Coaching and session design – Assess whether training sessions deliver intended technical and tactical outcomes through live ball‑tracking software.
- Objective measurement – Quantify player touches, passes, ball speed and time on the ball, and combine physical, technical and tactical demands to calculate total player load.
- Injury risk reduction – Identify hidden loads, such as extra striking drills missed by wearable GPS units.
- Rehabilitation – Compare post‑injury skill metrics directly to pre‑injury benchmarks, adding clarity to return‑to‑play decisions.
Beyond day‑to‑day training, the Connected Ball is expected to play a future role in technical development, rehab processes and talent identification, offering objective measures of technical competency and kicking performance that were previously difficult to capture.
Accessibility and Affordability
Built with scalability and affordability in mind, the Mitre x PlayerData Connected Ball is designed to democratise elite‑level insight from grassroots football to the professional game. Purpose‑built for training, planned features include:
- Six to eight hours of battery life
- Wireless charging
- Seamless integration with the existing PlayerData GPS platform

Speed and Simplicity at Launch
After launch, ball data will upload automatically to the cloud and be accessible within minutes via the PlayerData app. Initial metrics planned for release include:
- Touches and time on the ball
- Pass counts and distances
- Average and maximum ball velocity
Beyond pure analysis, the data is designed to help gamify skill development, keeping sessions engaging, competitive and measurable.
A Statement of Intent
The Mitre x PlayerData Connected Ball represents more than a new product. It is a statement of intent from two performance pioneers with a shared ambition to push the game forward. By merging Mitre’s heritage in ball design – using the FIFA Quality Pro certified Ultimax as the foundation – with PlayerData’s cutting‑edge GPS technology, a new benchmark for football innovation has been set.
