To mark two decades of collaboration with the Premier League, Nike has released an exclusive Merlin football for the 2019-20 season. This is the first version of the Merlin produced solely for the league, featuring a distinctive modular graphic and a vibrant color scheme inspired by the dynamism of the competition and its fan culture.
Design Inspired by Premier League Energy
The ball’s visual identity draws directly from the league’s fast‑paced character. Kieran Ronan, Nike’s General Manager of Global Equipment, explained the design philosophy:
“We wanted to design a ball that specifically illustrated the traits of Premier League football. A ball that felt hyper-technical and precise in nature, but also inspired by this English culture of living and breathing Premier League football.”
Advanced Construction for Enhanced Performance
The 2019-20 Merlin builds on the features of the previous model with several technical upgrades aimed at giving players extra precision and control.
- Four fuse‑welded panels create a larger “sweet spot,” improving range and accuracy.
- Nike Aerowtrack grooves ensure a more consistent flight path.
- Urban Grip, an updated version of Nike’s All Conditions Control (ACC) technology, increases traction on all surfaces and in any weather condition.
