Building on that legacy, the Mercurial Dream Speed collection adds the star power of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, and Samantha Kerr – three players renowned for their extreme pace. Now, the third edition, the Mercurial Dream Speed 003, continues the concept with a fresh design and a broader player roster.
Mercurial Dream Speed 003 Overview
Looking back at the first two editions, Nike focused on creating boots that not only enhance speed through advanced technologies but also remain breathable and allow faster movement thanks to bold, cutting-edge design. A key new feature for this third launch is the inclusion of additional players on the pitch. One confirmed name is Ansu Fati, the young FC Barcelona star who continues to impress with his quick, attacking style.
Social media speculation had suggested that this edition would be worn exclusively by Cristiano Ronaldo, due to leaked images of other items in the collection featuring his personalised logo. However, that turned out to be incorrect. With the sole exception of a small detail on the insoles, the boots do not carry any personal details of the Portuguese international. The confusion arose because Nike wanted to surprise Ronaldo with a unique, bespoke boot as a tribute to his 100 goals for the national team.
Design Inspired by CR7 Heritage
The design of the MDS 003 has a rich history behind it. The new Nike Mercurial football boots feature a diagonally split graphic pattern – an original way to showcase key details and make the boot visually striking. The upper incorporates several classic patterns from previous Mercurial CR7 designs, following the same theme and taking inspiration from the latest Mercurial Safari version.
Drawing entirely from earlier Nike Mercurial models worn by Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as some of the brand’s most eye-catching editions, Nike has created a boot with a unique look. The clear sources of inspiration are the 2010 Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly II Safari CR7 and the 2011 Nike Mercurial Superfly CR7 III.
Technical Features of the MDS 003
Those hoping for significant technological innovation in the MDS 003 will be disappointed. This is the same base version of the Nike Mercurial boot that launched in summer 2019. Still, it is worth recalling the key features:
- Microtextured Flyknit upper with NikeSkin overlay
- ACC (All Conditions Control)
- Two-piece modular outsole system with internal heel counter
- The Swoosh design on the toe box has a more textured finish to provide better grip when touching the ball
