Nike Introduce the Mercurial Vapor “Next Nature”

The latest addition to the storied Mercurial franchise, the Nike Mercurial Vapor “Next Nature”, sets a new benchmark for eco-conscious performance. It is crafted with at least 50% recycled content by weight, challenging the notion that only virgin materials can deliver elite-level containment and propulsion.

Key Sustainability Features

The boot incorporates a 100% recycled plate and a four-layer upper built from a combination of recycled materials and manufacturing scraps, including Flyprint, recycled poly, recycled TPU, and skin production waste. These elements work together to maintain the high performance expected from the Mercurial line while reducing environmental impact.

Scaling Sustainable Design Across the Mercurial Range

Learnings from the Next Nature model are being applied across the entire Mercurial lineup. As a result, the majority of Mercurial boots arriving in fall 2022 will contain at least 20% recycled content. This marks a significant step toward integrating sustainable practices into one of Nike’s most iconic performance families.

A Legacy of Innovation (1998–2022)

Since the original Vapor debuted in 1998, Nike has continuously advanced the boot to serve the future of athletes. The timeline below highlights key milestones in materials, technology, and sustainable design:

  • 2002: Vapor I introduced NikeFrame technology on an anatomical last to reduce weight.
  • 2006: Tiejin microfiber and a carbon last lowered the weight of the Vapor III.
  • 2008: Mercurial Vapor Superfly debuted Nike Flywire technology.
  • 2010: Superfly II featured Nike SENSE technology, allowing studs to extend and retract based on pressure and surface conditions.
  • 2012: Mercurial GS (Greenspeed) used recycled and renewable materials in the upper and plate.
  • 2013: Vapor VIII employed Teijin microfiber and ACC coating for improved ball control.
  • 2014: Superfly IV combined Flyknit, Dynamic Fit Collar, and Brio cables knitted into the upper for an improved fit and reduced weight.
  • 2018: Mercurial 360 introduced a 360-degree Flyknit construction.
  • 2021: The new Mercurial was built with seven precision-engineered components to reduce weight.
  • 2022: Mercurial Vapor “Next Nature” achieves at least 50% recycled content by weight.

The Next Nature model is expected to debut later this year, carrying forward a legacy of innovation while prioritizing sustainability.
