Nike has today released a new colourway of the Phantom GT football boots, drawing direct inspiration from the iconic 2002 Scorpion collection and the legendary “The Cage” advertising campaign. This reissue connects modern football fans with one of the brand’s most memorable marketing moments.
The 2002 Advertising Campaign – The Cage
The concept behind the campaign centred on a fictional knockout tournament. Eight teams, each featuring three star players of the era, competed on a closed pitch located on a ship in the high seas. Former footballer Eric Cantona served as referee. The first team to score a goal won that match and advanced.
Nike’s global marketing strategy also included organising local football tournaments in capital cities around the world, using the same rules as the advert.
At these local events, participants received interactive CD-ROMs in silver sleeves that contained the full advert. Because only a short, adapted version was shown on television, these discs became highly prized by those who obtained them.

The new Phantom GT Scorpion boots feature a silver/chrome upper. The small details reveal the inspiration: on the outside of each boot, a scorpion logo references the official Nike football from the same collection. Darker accents across the upper act as signposts to the secret ship location, while yellow and black stripes appear both on the boot’s small sock and on the tips of the laces.
