Nike PhantomVSN 2: Redesigned for Quick Passes and Superior Touch
The next generation of the PhantomVSN has arrived, with Nike focusing on a revamped fit, enhanced texture, and easy foot entry to meet the performance need

The next generation of the PhantomVSN has arrived, with Nike focusing on a revamped fit, enhanced texture, and easy foot entry to meet the performance needs of attacking players. Built from the inside-out, the PhantomVSN 2 places a high priority on foot shape and comfort over 90 minutes. Early testing reveals several notable upgrades over the original version, including a lower ankle cut that signals a fresh approach from the Swoosh.
Upper Design and New Ankle Cut
The boot upper is constructed with a symmetrical Flyknit external layer for an exquisite fit. Like its predecessor, it features the concealed Ghost Lace system, which provides an even strike surface and one-pull fit customization, along with Quadfit technology—a stretchable mesh that delivers foot lockdown. To create a more dynamic and sleeker silhouette, the cuff has been lowered under the medial malleolus bone to maximize ankle mobility versus containment. Pull tabs have been added for ease of entry and exit, and they include a small numeral graphic that calls out the GPS coordinates of Nike Football’s design space.
Touch and Control
Players require some slip on the outside of the foot for dribbling, but containment on the side where most passes are received and struck. The PhantomVSN 2’s texture has been significantly reengineered and is now informed by four different quadrants: the medial trap zone, strike zone, knuckle zone, and dribble zone. As the ball travels through each zone, the volume of texture is adjusted to accommodate these movements. Additionally, a 20 percent thinning of materials across the touch zones helps increase ball control.
Traction and Soleplate
An external heel clip is notched for better lateral containment, adding structure and support to one of the main irritation zones. Underfoot, the Nike PhantomVSN 2 retains Nike React cushioning for the small-sided version and a lightweight, responsive plate for the cleated version.
Initial Reaction and Notes
The colorway—a sharp mix of Black and Red with silver on the Swoosh—stands out effectively. The pull-tab on the front of the collar proves to be very useful when putting the boots on, making it much easier to squeeze into the snug collar. The lower cut around the ankle adds security without compromising the dynamic feel needed for sharp cuts and quick turns. The boots fit true to size, very similar to the original, and offer an ideal medium to wide fit option. The Ghost Lacing system remains a highlight, allowing laces to be tucked out of sight easily. There is an extensive amount of texture throughout the upper, which will be elaborated on in the full review.
Early performance testing has been very positive, with the experience rating similar to the original but with upgrades that take it to another level. A detailed breakdown covering everything will be published in the coming week.
