Nike PhantomVSN vs PhantomVSN 2 – Whats The Difference?

With the arrival of the all-new Nike PhantomVSN 2 in a striking Risk Red upper colorway, many players are asking how the second-generation boot compares to the original. Nike has revamped the fit, added superb texture, and improved foot entry to meet the performance needs of attacking players. While the two boots look similar at a glance, several key modifications take the PhantomVSN 2 to the next level.

Lower Ankle Cut for Greater Mobility

The cuff on the PhantomVSN 2 has been lowered under the medial malleolus bone. This change creates a more dynamic, sleeker silhouette and maximizes ankle mobility rather than containment.

Front Pull Tab for Easier Entry and Exit

A pull tab has been added to the heel, featuring a small numeral graphic that calls out the GPS coordinates of Nike Football’s design space. This simple addition makes pulling the boots on and off much easier.

Flyknit Update and Upper Texture

The boot upper uses a symmetrical Flyknit external layer for an exquisite fit. The texture on the PhantomVSN 2 has been significantly reengineered, informed by four quadrants: medial trap zone, strike zone, knuckle zone, and dribble zone. As the ball moves through each zone, the volume of the texture adjusts up and down to accommodate different touches.

Thinner Upper for Better Ball Control

Across the touch zones, the materials have been thinned by 20 percent to increase ball control.

Notched Heel Design

An external heel clip is notched for improved lateral containment. It also adds structure and support to one of the main irritation zones.

Retained Features from the Original PhantomVSN

Nike kept several elements from the first generation that already met performance specifications:

  • Concealed Ghost Lace system – provides an even strike surface and one-pull fit customization.
  • Quadfit technology – a stretchable mesh that delivers foot lockdown.
  • Nike React cushioning and lightweight, responsive plate – the same underfoot setup for FG surfaces.

On-Foot Comparison: Fit and Feel

When worn side by side, the PhantomVSN and PhantomVSN 2 fit very similarly. Nike has kept the overall shape identical, offering a medium to wide fit once feet are inside. The pull tab proves to be a huge, helpful addition. Regarding the lower cut collar, many will prefer the PhantomVSN 2 construction – it feels more natural when cutting and swiveling on the ankle.
