Portugal’s 2018 World Cup Kits: Designed for the Reigning Kings of Europe

With less than 90 days until the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia, a digital clock counting down the days has been installed in Moscow’s Red Square. Portugal, arriving as European champions after their historic Euro 2016 victory, have teamed up with Nike to reveal their home, away and pre‑match kits for the tournament. The collection reflects the team’s elevated status and the spirit of a nation proud of its footballing legacy.

Home Kit: A Modern Royal Look

The home kit Portugal will wear in Russia adopts a modern aesthetic with traditional deep red, cross‑dyed panels and brighter red sleeves. Gold detailing runs through the design, symbolising the country’s first continental triumph at Euro 2016. According to Pete Hoppins, Senior Design Director at Nike Football Apparel, the concept is “modern royalty”. He explains that from Luís Figo to Cristiano Ronaldo, iconic Portuguese players have led and united the team – and the nation. “We wanted to tell the story of the king of modern football leading this new team,” Hoppins adds, referencing the captain whose records and leadership command total respect.

Away Kit: Nod to Naval History

While Cristiano Ronaldo remains the figurehead, players such as André Silva, João Mário and André Gomes represent the future of Portuguese football. Hoppins notes that “Portugal is a nation of discovery, that absolutely extends to their passion and attitude towards football”. This idea drives the away kit: a radiant kinetic green print, inspired by the key points of a compass rose, adorns the front of an all‑white shirt. The design honours the country’s history of exploration and symbolises the ongoing search for new talent.

Pre‑Match Jersey: National Pride

The pre‑match jersey is one of the most symbolic in the tournament, featuring a large Portuguese cross taken directly from the national flag, dominating the chest. Combined with the home and away kits, the collection sends a clear message of hunger for further success.
