Puma has released 10 new third kit designs for leading European clubs, sparking widespread debate among fans. The bold approach repositions traditional club elements, moving the crest to the back of the jersey and placing the club name prominently on the front.
Controversial Design Choices
The initial response to the kits has been critical, with observers questioning whether the designs are a social experiment, if professional players will actually wear them in matches, or if they were conceived by interns. The primary source of controversy stems from Puma’s decision to place the club name across the chest while moving the official club crest to the back of the jersey, under the collar.
Design Philosophy and Features
According to Puma, the new third kits “create fearless new expressions of each club’s identity and challenge tradition by reimagining conventional football kits in a brand-new approach that merges football and streetwear culture.” On each jersey, the club’s badge is repositioned to the back beneath the collar. Select jerseys also feature a tonal repeat graphic of the club’s crest embossed into the fabric. The most eye-catching element is the club’s name emblazoned across the front in each club’s bespoke font, with the PUMA cat centrally positioned for balance.
Material and Sustainability
The jerseys are made from 100% recycled polyester and incorporate PUMA dryCELL thermoregulation technology to keep athletes dry and comfortable. An ultra-light jacquard structure on the back enhances breathability during intense performance. Puma has also used an innovative Dope Dye manufacturing process that significantly reduces water and dye usage, supporting the brand’s sustainability goals.
