Choosing the correct football boots for the playing surface is essential for performance and safety. This guide explains the key differences between natural grass, synthetic grass, and indoor surfaces, and outlines the soleplate types designed for each.
Surface Categories
- Natural Grass: Hard‑Ground (HG), Firm‑Ground (FG), Soft‑Ground (SG)
- Synthetic Grass: Artificial‑Ground (AG), Turf (TF), Carpet
- Futsal / Indoor: Street / Court, Indoor / Gym
Firm Ground Cleats (FG)

Firm ground is a natural grass surface with short grass and soil that is neither too wet nor too dry. FG stud patterns use moulded, non‑removable plastic studs – often triangular, bladed, circular, or conical. Multi‑Ground (MG, FG/MG, FG/AG) patterns may also be used on firm ground, as they are hybrids between FG and AG boots.
Soft‑Ground (SG)

Soft‑ground natural grass is wet, soft, and often muddy. SG cleats typically have long, removable metal studs. Classic SG boots feature six studs – two longer ones in the heel and four in the forefoot. Modern designs combine a regular FG stud pattern with six screw‑in metal SG studs, creating a hybrid between traditional FG and classic SG.
Hard‑Ground (HG)

Hard‑ground natural grass consists of dry, hard soil with very little moisture – common in hot, dry climates. HG cleats vary by brand but generally use conical or round studs similar to FG patterns, though shorter and often with one or two extra studs per shoe.
Artificial‑Ground (AG)

Synthetic surfaces are increasingly popular due to low maintenance. They are made of plastic blades and filled with rubber pellets and sometimes sand. AG boots have a greater number of shorter, conical studs. Extra glue or fabric around the toe improves durability against abrasion. AG patterns can be used on firm grass, though performance may be limited on soft soil. Multi‑Ground (MG, FG/MG, FG/AG) patterns are also accepted.
Turf (TF)

Astro turf is an older synthetic surface, rough and similar to carpet. It is short, often filled with sand, and laid on concrete. Turf boots differ from cleats – they have a thicker, padded soleplate with small dimpled patterns for minimal grip. Cleats are not recommended on turf because they may penetrate too deeply or not enough, increasing injury risk. For this surface, the specific turf outsole is strongly recommended.
Futsal / Street

Futsal surfaces are flat playing areas, such as outdoor streets or indoor gymnasiums. Indoor boots (IC) have flat soles. Street‑focused models have thicker outsoles and reinforced uppers for durability. Gym‑focused models are lower to the ground with thinner outsoles, emphasising agility. Minimal turf boots are sometimes used on gym floors, but this is not recommended.
