The project first moved forward in 1972, but it took until 1983 for the inaugural Nike Tiempo to emerge. That boot was a black leather model—colour was still years away—adorned with gold accents and the word “Tiempo” pressed into the side panel. Players embraced it immediately.
The 1994 World Cup Star: Tiempo Premier
In 1992, Nike created what would become the standout boot of the 1994 World Cup: the Nike Tiempo Premier. Eight members of the eventual champion Brazilian team wore these boots, cementing a legacy with every touch. This version used soft kangaroo leather for superior comfort, paired with a prominent tongue carrying the Swoosh at its centre.
Evolution Through the Late 1990s

Between 2004 and 2005, global superstar Ronaldinho, after testing several Nike models, settled on the Nike Air Legend. This boot evolved from the Premier and used a Mercurial soleplate, which the Brazilian star favoured. Special editions followed, including the legendary Air Legend R10.
The “Premier” name faded as Zoom Air technology became the focus. In 2008, the Nike Air Legend II carried the Tiempo spirit forward, again featuring the word “Tiempo” embossed on the side, while being significantly lighter and using some of the finest kangaroo leather available.
World Cup 2010 and the Legend III
With the 2010 World Cup approaching, Nike introduced the Tiempo Legend III. It held to the classic silhouette but adopted a cleaner, more minimal look, reducing the tongue size. Premium kangaroo leather remained a highlight.
In 2011, the Legend IV arrived. It kept the original essence while adopting a thoroughly modern design. Kangaroo leather on the forefoot, ACC technology, and tri-claw studs for better traction defined this iteration.
The tongue was eliminated entirely, marking a major step toward the Tiempo we recognise today.
More “Tiempo” Than Ever
By 2013, the Tiempo Legend V appeared—one of the finest models in the line. It built on the previous version but introduced Kangalite at the rear, replacing synthetic microfibres and blending seamlessly with the kangaroo leather at the front. Special editions, such as Francesco Totti’s, became instant classics.
The Legend VI marked a genuine leap forward. Seams on the forefoot disappeared, replaced by an internal cage that gave structure to the kangaroo leather. The result was a cleaner feel without losing the natural leather character. The stud plate stayed unchanged because players loved it.
Flyknit Arrives: Tiempo Legend VII
Launched in 2017, the Legend VII overhauled every detail. Flyknit technology shaped the rear and inner lining, while the internal cage remained in the leather forefoot. This created a technically advanced boot that still honoured the classic Tiempo identity.
Nike Tiempo Legend 8: Modern Refinement
The latest Tiempo Legend redesigned the upper, replacing the internal structure with the Quadfit system, which runs the full length of the boot for a snug fit. The upper weave was also modified to improve ball grip. The rear uses synthetic microfibre, with Flyknit reserved for the inner lining and lacing area. This version has performed strongly at recent tournaments.
The journey of the Nike Tiempo has been long, full of changes, bold experiments, and outstanding designs. What makes it truly remarkable is that this story continues—the Tiempo line shows no signs of slowing down.
