With football expanding rapidly and becoming fully professional in several European nations and beyond, demand for playing and training kits far exceeded the capacity of existing textile mills. Seizing this gap, H. Aphrey Brothers founded Umbro on 23 May 1924 in Cheadle, a town near Manchester in northern England. The brand name itself derived from the founders.

Umbro built its early reputation by supplying kits to FA Cup finalists, the oldest club competition in the world. During the Second World War, its factories switched entirely to producing uniforms for the British military and accessories for Allied aircraft. The brand’s golden era arrived in the 1960s, driven by the launch of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup and the first televised football matches. At that time, Umbro outfitted 85% of top English clubs and the leading teams across the English-speaking world. A landmark deal in 1961 saw Umbro become the official UK retailer of adidas football boots.

The brand supplied kits for world‑class sides, including Brazil (1994 World Cup winners), England (1966 World Cup winners), Celta (national and European champions), and Manchester United (national and European champions).
